I wish I could watch Super Rugby on television, but the Australian broadcast rights are so tied up with Fox Sports that it's almost impossible to view a match unless you subscribe to Foxtel. And that means a full blown subscription, with IQ box, channels you'll never watch, and a "premium" sports add on pack. So if you don't live in an area with existing cable infrastructure - forget it.
And this really shits me. I love my Rugby Union, and I think a lot of other people might get turned on to the game if only there was an opportunity to WATCH THE FUCKING MATCHES. There's no such thing as just subscribing to a sports channel or two with Foxtel. It's always a "premium add on" package. And screw Foxtel Now - you can't record, and there's no "on demand" for sports. I work during the majority of the times that Super Rugby matches are live, so Foxtel Now is just FUCKING USELESS. There's no point in subscribing to it if I still have no access to the only thing I want to watch on it. Get with the times Foxtel, if you're going to charge for a "premium" service, then make it actually accessible. As you can tell this is really pissing me off. I wish the ARU could find a way to fund Rugby Union in this country without making broadcast deals that mean 95 percent of Australians don't have access to watching matches on television. How can you grow the game and make it stronger if no one can see the friggin matches? Sorry, I failed to mention that Channel 10 broadcasts the "match of the round" on Sunday morning at 8.00am (great, this is when I'm getting ready to leave for work). But who decides what makes the match of the round, and does it ever involve the team I support? This is where Rugby League has won the battle for audience share. It's a truely shit game compared to Union, but the viewing public can actually watch a match on television. Such a shame. Well done boys.
You came out with determination and played some solid rugby at the stockade. Admittedly the Queensland Reds were not in top form, and Higginbotham, who defected from the Rebels two years ago, was red-carded 9 minutes into the match for a shoulder charge. So it was 15 versus 14 for 70 minutes. Actually 15 versus 13 for another 10 of those 70, after a dangerous tip tackle made against new Rebels scrum half Will Genia (one of my heroes) saw another Reds player receive a yellow card. Pretty hard to be competitive with a man down, but credit to the Reds they kept fighting. |
AuthorA white middle aged man who doesn't understand why things need to be so annoying - usually the small things that just shouldn't be an issue. But then maybe I'm just a grumpy old fart who refuses to accept that my position of institutionalised privilege gives me no right to complain or feel outrage on behalf all members of our society? You can make up your own mind about that. Archives
